John Barba is no ordinary handyman. He has spent a 30-year career in the residential construction industry, spearheading several development projects and serving as Vice President of K. Hovnanian Homes. After four years there, John left to found his own company, Barba Builders, Inc. When John began looking for new business ventures, he explored multiple options including purchasing an existing business and starting a new franchise. During his research, he came across House Doctors and was interested in the possibilities a handyman franchise presented.

Why did you choose a franchise concept?
I chose a franchise for two main reasons. The first was the strong support that franchised concepts have in place to help new business owners get up and running. The second was the proven business model and processes franchises provide. I also liked the idea of a brand with national recognition because of the reliability and professionalism associated with the name.

How did you learn about the brand?
I came across House Doctors as I was researching whether to buy an existing handyman company or start a franchise. After connecting with Jarid Kossen at House Doctors, I felt comfortable with the team and systems they had in place. I knew that by joining this national brand, I would be nicely positioned to use my past experience to grow a business in the fragmented handyman market.

Why was this brand the right fit for you?
Through researching the brand, I was confident that the corporate management team would equip me with the skills and provide the support I needed to hit the ground running. I knew that between my work experience in construction and the support of the marketing and internet-savvy back office team, House Doctors would be a great partner. What also stood out about House Doctors was how it reinvests in its franchisees to help them growth their businesses.

What have been some career milestones that you have experienced?
After 30 years in business, I feel like some of the biggest milestones have been successfully running an award-winning home building company with Barba Builders and also successfully starting a “spot lot” division with a K Hovnanian Homes. In addition, I am a past president of both the local and state Builders Associations, which will provide great networking opportunities when I launch House Doctors in Madison.
